MSU Extension Program offers farmers a jump on 2009 season



LAPEER COUNTY -- Farming's always something of a throw of the dice, but area farmers can get a jump on the coming growing season by attending Michigan State University (MSU) Extension Thumb region's 2008 Agriculture Review, from 8:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 11 in Burton or one of five other locations.

In addition to reviewing the 2008 growing season field crop educators will cover things ranging from crop varieties to chemicals to nutrients.

Participants can receive two Michigan Department of Agriculture restricted-use pesticide applicator recertification credits and four certified crop adviser continuing education units for attending this event.

The event will include sessions on wheat and soybean fungicides, energy crops, the Farm Bill's ACRE program, forage technology and western bean cutworm.

Corn growers will be offered sessions covering how to select varieties for the best yield; discussions of how many seeds to plant per acres; economic nitrogen management; using manure phosphorus on corn; and soil test changes.

In addition to the Burton event, the 2008 Agriculture Review will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 5 in Sandusky; 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 9 in Ubly; 5:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 11 in Goodells; 8:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 12 in Caro; and 8:30 a.m. to noon in Birch Run.

There is a $15 registration fee for each of these locations , which includes lunch and materials.

The Sandusky event is free, but farmers need to call (810) 648-2515 to register. No pre-registration is required for the Ubly program.
