ThumbWorks to host seminar on investing for area farmers

MARLETTE -- There's more to successful farming than just having sunshine and the rain come at the right times -- there's also proper investing and ThumbWorks, a Michigan Works agency, will host a seminar on agricultural investing Dec. 16 at its offices at 3270 Wilson Street.

Eldon Preston, a business support coordinator with ThumbWorks, said the event is open to all farmers and agricultural producers in Lapeer, Sanilac, Tuscola and Huron counties.

The seminar will kick-off with registration and coffee and donuts at 8:30 a.m., followed by a welcome by John Sheffler from Active Feed Company.

Preston said the special CPA/tax staff from Greenstone Farm Credit Services will discuss changes to the 2008 tax laws, producer input costs for 2009 and lending issues from 9:05 a.m. to 9:50 a.m.

He said Bob Boehm, with the commodity and marketing department at Michigan Farm Bureau, will follow up at 10 a.m. with a discussion of the outlook for 2009 and areas of investment concern and progress for members of the agricultural community.

From 11 a.m. to noon, said Preston, area farmers will get an opportunity to meet with Thumb area bank farm specialists. Preston said he doesn't believe traditional farm financing will be an issue this year, since the area banks that rely on farm financing didn't get involved with the sub-prime mortgage debacle.
