"It was so exciting," said Best. "It was like a dream." The 5 foot, 8 inch blonde competed against 98 other hopefuls in front of a sold out audience at the McMorran Theater in Port Huron. The delegates competed in runway, a choreographed evening gown contest on the catwalk and fitness/swimsuit, a high fashion styled competition showcasing physical fitness and health. The judges chose their top 15 and then narrowed their choices to the top five. Each finalist was asked a different question. After the judges announced three more names, Best and Katie Graham from Spaulding were the final two that remained on stage. Best, who grew up in Hadley Township but recently moved to Oakland County, competed as Troy's representative in the competition. "I was so shocked, I couldn't believe it," said Best. "I didn't cry until I saw my parents crying." Kelly's mother, Diane Best, couldn't hold back her tears. "She did this all on her own," said Diane. "She worked really hard. She followed a dream she's had since she was a little girl." "I'm am unbelievably proud of her," said her father Cliff Best. "There is nothing more satisfying than seeing hard work pay off. We will be there in Nashville in April." Best will represent Michigan in the 2007 Miss USA pageant. Miss USA competes in the Miss Universe pageant. Best, a student at Michigan State University, is pursuing a career in business communications. She hopes to have a career in public relations or human resources. She will use her crown to help raise awareness and fight breast and ovarian cancer, she said and plans to dedicate time to charities supporting confidence and self-worth in young girls and pre-teens.
