Local News PUBLISHED:
Problems began when Harley was released Tuesday evening from the Sanilac County Jail where he had been held on a parole detainer from the Michigan Department of Corrections. Harley had previously been convicted of attempted uttering and publishing and three offenses of operating a vehicle under the influence. Harley later told police he had no ride from jail and was planning on walking to Lapeer County. He was on foot for about 15 miles and found the unlocked truck on Shephard Road in Maple Valley Township, about five mile east of Brown City. He was so tired he fell asleep inside the truck and woke up early morning Wednesday. He knew he'd never make it on foot in time for his appointment in the city of Lapeer, he later told police. Harley drove the truck to Lapeer and met with his parole officer. It's thought he cruised around Lapeer County. The truck was discovered missing about 7 a.m. and 9-1-1 dispatchers spread a BOL (be on look-out) broadcast on the radio. Someone recognized the truck in the North Branch area and dispatchers contacted DeTavernier. "They said he was traveling north on Lake Pleasant Road," DeTavernier said. "I sat on Industrial Drive and watched him come on by. He was just riding around and coming up to North Branch to see people he knew." DeTavernier arrested Harley and turned him over to the Sanilac County Sheriff's Department. He was arraigned Thursday by 73-2 District Court Judge James Marcus on a charge of unlawfully driving away an auto. Marcus ordered a $50,000, 10 percent cash surety bond. Harley waived his right to a preliminary exam and is scheduled to be arraigned, 1:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in front of Circuit Court Judge Donald Teeple. He remained in the Sanilac County Jail at press time Friday. Susan Younger may be reached at (810) 664-0811, Ext. 8122 or susan.younger@lapeergroup.com. |
