Broncos run past Tigers in TVC opener



CARO -- North Branch opened the Tri-Valley Conference-East portion of its 2008 schedule with a convincing 4-1 win over the host Caro Tigers on Thursday.Ê

Tyler Kreiner and Zach Thibodeau led all scorers with two points, both picking up one goal and one assist. Keir Veskivali and Patrick Ankley added the other two goals for the Broncos (1-1, 1-0 TVC-E). Elliot Orr and Cody Kipp each picked up an assist.

Goalkeeper Mike Keith made 13 saves in net for North Branch. The Broncos host Frankenmuth on Monday, with gametime slated for 4:30 p.m.

Montrose 2, Dryden 0: At Montrose, the Cardinals fell to the host Rams in what their coach called "a great game".
With the score ties 0-0 at the half, Montrose finally got on the board at the 20-minute mark of the second half on a nice wall feed. Ten minutes later, the Rams scored again to seal the victory.
"Overall, the team shape was outstanding," Dryden coach Ken Kunz said. "In the first half, Montrose could not move the ball at all. We took away all the passing lanes. We need to continue to work on our skill, but I'm very happy on their work ethic so far.
"We really played a great game out there." Dryden goaltender Mathew Kunz recorded 12 saves. The Cardinals travel to Memphis on Monday, August 25.

Imlay City 2, Armada 1: At Imlay City, the Spartans scored twice in the second half to get the one-goal win over the Tigers on Wednesday. Armada scored at the 11:28 mark of the first half to take the early lead. Imlay City's Luis Barragan notched two goals in the second half to propel the Spartans to the Blue Water Area Conference victory. Imlay City's goalkeeper Jonathan Torres made four saves in net for the Spartans (2-0, 1-0 BWAC).
Imlay City will host Capac on Monday, August 25.

Lapeer East 3, North Branch 0: In North Branch, Lapeer East's Coiln Owen kept the North Branch attackers out of the net in the second half as the Eagles opened their 2008 season with a shutout victory over their Lapeer County neighbors from the north.
East's Andy White opened the scoring for the Eagles with 14 minutes left to play in the first half. Alex Zavislak assisted on the goal. Six minutes later, Clayton Tomczyk scored on a penalty kick to make the score 2-0 at the half in favor of East.
With 31 minutes left to play in the second half, freshman Alex Hanson finished the scoring on a nice pass from White.

"I thought our center defender Jon Smith was the best player on the field today," East coach Chad Kenny said. "North Branch has a lot of speed and athleticism, and our back line, led by Jon did a good job containing that speed. I was also really happy with the play of both our goalies.

Imlay City 4, LakeVille 0: At Imlay City, the Spartans kicked off their 2008 season with a shutout win over the Falcons on Monday. Sylvester Galeana notched the first goal of the season for the Spartans on a penalty kick at the 24:04 mark of the game. Fourteen minutes later, Ethan Walker scored an unassisted goal to put the Spartans up by two goals at the half.
In the second half, Jesse Gregory scored on an assist from Luis Barragan to make it 3-0. Barragan closed out the scoring on an unassisted goal at the 30:38 mark of the second half. Imlay City goalkeeper Jonathan Torres made eight saves to get the shutout.

Carman-Ainsworth 3, Lapeer West 0: In Lapeer, the Panthers surrendered two first half goals on their way to losing their first game of the 2008 season to the Cavaliers. Carman-Ainsworth added one more goal in the second half to account for the final score.
"We played very well for the first 20 minutes of the game," West coach Matt McCafferey said.
