20th classic car show rolls into Lapeer Days Aug. 19

John and Debbie Monteleone take pride in owning a 1959 Oldsmobile ninety eight, but they are leaving it home for the 20th annual Lapeer Days car show.

Instead, the husband and wife duo have been busy as co-chairs for the event for a dozen or so years. John said he leaves his car at home because it wouldn't be right "to enter a show you put on."

This year's show will take place Aug. 19 — the day after the Woodward Dream Cruise. John said the show has been slightly hurt by the Dream Cruise, but added some diehard car enthusiasts make it to both the Cruise and the Lapeer show.

"We picked it up when the Woodward Dream Cruise started," John said. "It's a good time depending on the weather. We get cars from Canada and Alpena."

Registration for the Lapeer Days car show starts at 9 a.m. The show runs until 3 p.m. Aug. 19. The car registration fee is $12. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. that day.

The show gives out awards in 40 categories including top 40 picks and choices by Lapeer Mayor Bill Sprague, the Lapeer Chamber of Commerce, and Meijers (the show's sponsor).

John said over the years, the show has included virtually anything on wheels. He even recalled a time someone brought a child's wagon with a motor on it.

The restoration of classic cars has become quite popular, he said. Some enthusiasts like to "chord," as John put it, a name for the customization of a Ford with a Chevy engine, for example.

"They're a piece of history and you want them to be original," he said. "(At the show) we get hot rods, street machines and stock. Motorcycles are welcome. We get everything that runs."

The car show will also include 50/50 raffles and door prizes for exhibitors.

Dash plaques will be given to the first 100 cars registered.

The show will take place rain or shine.

"My wife and I co-chair the show for the Chamber of Commerce. Rotary Park is one of the nicest locations," John said.

Debbie said about the show, "I'd love for more cars to join in. We probably had 130-140 last year. I do the registration and tally the ballots. When you're busy you don't look up (at the cars) because it can be hectic."
