Now a scholarship will be offered for the first time as a memorial in her honor through the Lapeer County Community Foundation for 2007-08.

The scholarship fund was established in 2005, said Janet Manning, executive director of the Lapeer County Community Foundation. Manning said Gelhausen was a longtime educator in Lapeer County. After her retirement from the Lapeer Community Schools, where she was principal of Irwin Elementary School, Gelhausen continued to tutor and teach at the University of Michigan-Flint. She was also active as a volunteer for the PIX Arts Council, Friends of the Library, and the Lapeer County Community Foundation. In 2005, she was named Citizen of the Year by the Lapeer Area Chamber of Commerce.

"Irma was my number one volunteer," Manning said. "She was one of those behind the scenes people. She was my sounding board ... and a wonderful person. I miss her."

The fund criteria is to advance the values of community education through development and encouragement of teachers devoted to a well-rounded education.

Applicants must be third year or more students in college/university studies at a four-year institution. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and be Lapeer County residents.

Preference will be given to graduates of the Lapeer Community Schools. The financial condition of the applicant and their family will be considered. The scholarship may be used for school tuition, books, and fees.

The scholarship application deadline is Aug. 15.

Manning said she has already received a few applications for the scholarship. Generally, the foundation always receives several applicants for scholarships, she added.

Applications are available through the foundation office at (810) 664-0691 or at 220 W. Nepessing St., Suite 202 in downtown Lapeer. For more information on this scholarship or others, visit the Lapeer County Community Foundation's Web site at www.lapeercountycommunityfoundation.org.
