Local News PUBLISHED:
The festivities kick-off Thursday evening with an ice-cream social under the pavilion. There will be an old fashion sing-along with music provided by Ethel and Richard. Following the social, a teen dance, sponsored by Wind Connect, will take place on the tennis courts. DJ Brad Osentoski is sure to keep the tracks playing all night as teens dance the night away, free of charge. Friday activities kick off with village wide garage sales, while later in the day, the Bingham Ambulance Service is sponsoring a COW-DROP. For the gamblers out there, squares can be purchased at the tractor pull. All proceeds will be going to the Bingham Ambulance Service. For more family oriented activities, there will be a baseball tournament Friday evening, in which alumni will play against current Ubly high school players. While the baseball game promises to be a doozy, the most anticipated event of the weekend may be the annual truck/tractor pull, which begins Friday evening. The Ubly Boy Scouts will be sponsoring the food tent provided at the truck pull. As a day filled with several activities for kids, Saturday includes a kiddie parade, followed by a pi–ata for all children. Junior firefighter activities will take place at the Veterans Park as well. The Athletic Boosters will also be sponsoring the Ubly Homecoming 5K Walk/Run on Saturday morning. As is tradition the last several years, the crowning of Miss Ubly takes places Saturday at noon on the tennis courts. Saturday afternoon is the Ubly Homecoming Celebration Kids Day, which includes the kiddie tractor pull and old time games, a three legged race, water balloon toss, drinking contest and seed spitting contest for the kids. A talent show ("You Can Be a Star") will take place later on Saturday, as well as an art show from Ubly students. Also that day, the Ubly Police Department will be holding a Child Safety Awareness booth at the Ubly Village Park from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Ubly Village Park. There will be books regarding farm, drug and rural safety, as well as fingerprinting of children and free gun locks. If you have a child that you would like fingerprinted, but can't make it on Saturday, contact Chief Matt Kuhl at (989) 658-2433 to set up a date and a time. The night winds down with the continuation of the truck/track pull, beer tent and live music under the tent. Sunday closes the celebration with the annual grand parade, beginning at 12:30 p.m. The theme of this year's parade is "Hats Off to Heroes." Parade line-up takes place at the Gemini Plastic parking lot. Following the parade, there will be a chicken barbeque sponsored by FFA Alumni, bingo at the St. John's Parish Center and a polka dance. The Homecoming Committee groups this year include Lioness Club, Lions Club, VFW, Ladies Auxiliary, TVO Ladies Auxiliary, TVO and the Community Club. Support groups are the Bingham Fire Department and the Bingham Ambulance Service. |
