Sports PUBLISHED:
"The time is right to engage in a serious analysis of bringing intercollegiate sports to the University of Michigan-Flint, aimed at scholar-athletes," said Interim Chancellor Jack Kay. The BRAC is comprised of faculty, students, staff, alumni and community members from throughout Genesee County. Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Duncan Beagle and auto dealership president William Golling have agreed to co-chair the commission. "The Flint is well-known nationally for its rich and proud tradition of athletics," Judge Beagle said. "We have produced many winners and it is only fitting that as the university moves from a commuter to a residential campus that we take a closer look at making athletics a part of its tradition. "And an athletic program will engage students as both participants and spectators. It is the right time to do this." Fellow commissioner, William Golling agreed. "The almost 7000 men and women who attend the University of Michigan-Flint already know about its strong academic traditions," Golling said. "Now, we'll find out more about their interest in and desire to support athletics similar to programs in Dearborn and Ann Arbor. Besides the obvious benefits a sports program would provide to the students, it could also enhance the downtown Flint area. "An athletic program at the university could provide economic opportunities and support existing and/or proposed facilities." A consulting firm with extensive experience in studying intercollegiate athletics will be selected soon to worth with the BRAC in developing a formal recommendation to the university this fall. |
