Local News PUBLISHED:
The main parade, which typically lasts 45 minutes, will begin at noon and participants are asked to show up no later than 11:30 a.m. Participants for both parades must meet at the south end of town at the old ball field. Those who wish to participate do not need to register and will not be charged a fee to enter; however, donations are welcome. "Come as you are," said parade coordinator and owner of Lou's Automotive in Hadley, Lou Berard. Berard, who has been treasurer for Hadley Lions Club for the past 14 years, said this is the first time he has been asked to be parade coordinator. Volunteers, Cindy Daly and Jeanne Tuski, will also help with the parade. "I volunteered because they weren't going to have the parade," said Daly, Hadley Township clerk. "They didn't have enough people, so Jeanne and I said we'd help. They have the parade every year." Lloyd Broecker, Hadley Township treasurer and member of the Hadley Lions Club, said the main parade began in 1974, just 10 years before Hadley celebrated its 150th anniversary. Daly said people can expect to see a color guard, which will lead the procession, vintage cars, horses, fire trucks, and lots of campaigning in this year's parade. This year's grand marshals are Jack and Reta Martin, and Irene Eckel. "Last year was one of the best parades we've ever had," Berard said. "This year might be just as good because more people are staying home. But, you never know." Berard said they are still seeking participants, volunteers, and vendors for the day's festivities. Hadley Lions Club will be serving hot dogs, bratwurst, and kielbassa at the Old Feed Store during the day. They will also hand out tickets for a free ice cream treat to children. Several local businesses will also be open during the celebration, including Hadley General Store from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Elaine's Quilty Shop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, Le Fleur Decor's annual 4th of July Art & Soul Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 3442 Road in Hadley. There will not be any fireworks, nor will there be a Chamber breakfast on Sunday. For more information, contact Berard at (810) 797-4531. |
