State Rep. John Stahl (R-Arcadia Township) recently recognized Venema for her work as a puppy raiser for people who are blind or visually impaired in helping to establish their independence.

"It is truly my honor to recognize Chris Venema for her commitment to enhancing lives," Stahl said in a news release. "There are nearly 400 puppies growing up in 23 states and Canada right now who hope to one day become leader dogs. I am happy to have these young heroes represented in my community."

Recently, nearly 60 volunteer puppy raisers statewide gathered at the capitol in Lansing promoting the message of equal opportunity. "We are very fortunate that these volunteers are so dedicated to enhancing independence. Without puppy raisers we would not be able to provide leader dogs," said Greg Grabowski, president and CEO for Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester.

Leader dogs are provided free to qualified people including travel and 26 days of room and board at the Rochester facility.

The organization is funded by donations from Lions and Lioness Club members, individuals, foundations, and corporations.
