"Any service, like the health department, Big Brothers Big Sisters or Girl Scouts, can get a booth and set up a fun activity for the families to do and in return they (the families) get a flyer or listen to a speech about their organization, said Membership Specialist for Girl Scouts Fair Winds Council Penny Lamkey. "The parents get information and the kids see fun," Lamkey said. This year, dozens of non-profit organizations and businesses will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Lapeer providing information and fun activities for families such as face painting, children jewelry making, story telling and bubble making. In addition to the activities, Safe And Sound will be available to provide children with ID cards. Lamkey estimated that the first 200-400 children should be able to receive their IDs free but the number could change depending on how much money they receive from sponsors. Once all the free IDs have been given out, families will be asked to pay the $5 fee for the IDs. There will also be a booth available for parents to check-up on their children's immunization records, Lamkey said. This booth will allow parents to see what immunizations their children have received or need to receive. The event is free to the public. Those wishing to have a booth at the event must register by July 1. Non-profit organizations get a booth free, whereas other organizations have to pay $25.
