MAYFIELD TWP -- The trophy for the first charity horseshoe tournament for Paradise Animal Rescue won't be going far.

Brothers Marvin and Cliff June representing Mayfield Township's MDM Automotive beat the lawyers of Metamora's Kohl, Harris, Nolan, McCarthy, Turkleson & Ogden, PC 106 to 102 June 14 at Replays Sports Complex.

That means they'll be displaying the tournament's traveling golden horseshoe trophy at their place of business for the next year.

More importantly, they helped raise almost $800 for the Paradise Animal Rescue. Founded by Tammy Walch in 2002, the Deerfield Township-based all volunteer, non-profit organization is Lapeer County's first and only animal protection shelter registered with the Michigan Department of Agriculture.

Third place went to event co-founder Mary Becker of CharterWest Mortgage with 56 points, followed by Die Tech Tool of Imlay City with 44 points, Gerlach's Bowling Center at 39 points and Exit Realty Group scoring 19 points.

"The turnout was great and we couldn't have asked for better weather," said McCorkle, who along with Becker created the event.

"I am so grateful to all the businesses and people who donated something, and the Paradise Animal Rescue volunteers who donated their time. We couldn't have done it without them," added Becker.

Becker, who moved to Lapeer from Shelby Township last August, also runs a similar fund-raising for the AuSable Valley Animal Shelter near Grayling where she has a cabin. "I am working on my Fourth Annual Horseshoe Tournament for the AuSable Valley Animal Shelter, said Becker, noting that group "is also in dire need of funds as P.A.R. It takes a lot of planning, but well worth the benefit for the homeless dogs and cats".

A Paradise Animal Rescue spokesman said the group is funded solely by private donations and does not receive local, state or federal funding. The spokesman added, Paradise Animal Rescue goes through roughly 175 pounds of kitty litter and 60 pounds of cat food each week.

Becker said she plans on making the tournament an annual event.

For more information on P.A.R., to adopt an animal, or make a donation, visit its Web site at www.parpets.org, or stop in at the facility at 5380 Lapeer Road, Deerfield Township.
