Almont's Putnam and Yaklin help West win All-Star game

RICHMOND -- All winter long, the Almont backcourt duo of Chanahl Putnam and Lindsey Yaklin terrorized their Blue Water Area opponents while also helping their team make school history by recording the first 20-0 season, winning the BWAC title and winning the school's first-ever girls basketball District title.

Last Thursday, the duo took to the courts once again to wear the black-and-orange of the Raiders for one last time in the Blue Water All-Star Basketball Game at Richmond High School.

Putnam and Yaklin combined to score 20-second half points in helping the West defeat the East by a final score of 61-39. Putnam, the St. Clair County Community College-bound guard, scored all 12 of her points in the second half and was named the game's MVP as her West squad outscored the East 46-17 after halftime, with most of the points scored in transition from baskets off steals by Putnam.

"It was fun because we just started running," Putnam said. "That was the only time I scored."

Putnam sparked the offense with her defense, and if she wasn't scoring, it seemed like she was the one orchestrating the scoring for her teammates.

Armada's Taylor Prior led all scorers with 13 points for the West squad. Yaklin, who will join Putnam in the fall at SC4, nailed two three-pointers and finished the game with eight points. Imlay City's Lindsey VanDyk and Brown City's Krislene Dye each added two points for the West squad. For the East, Kelsey Hall (six) and Kendra Smith (five) from Marlette each contributed in the game, which annually features the best graduating senior basketball players from the Blue Water Area.
