The center will present 22 free workshops at three levels: ABCs for preschoolers; PACT (Parents and Children Together) Part 1 for first & second graders; and PACT Part 2 for third & fourth graders.

Workshops will be held at seven different locations throughout the summer, and will be geared toward a specific age group. Children will enjoy fun reading games, snacks, a story, and a free book. A parent or caregiver is asked to accompany each child, and siblings are also welcome to attend. Families may attend more than one workshop.

Each workshop will be presented by Karmen Wilson, family program coordinator at Family Literacy Center.

"We hold the workshops in the summer to keep the kids sharp so they don't lose a lot of what they've learned," said Wilson. "A lot of times they might learn something new, but it also reinforces in a fun way what they are learning in school... it's a good review."

Wilson, who has been with the center for two years, said the center also hosts the workshops at various schools in Lapeer County and surrounding areas throughout the school year. At the workshops, kids work on vowel and letter sounds, and play sequencing games and games with words.

"We do it for the kids and the parents," Wilson said. "We like to get the parents involved."

Wilson said each family will receive a booklet with instructions for each game that was played at the workshop. The booklet will help parents re-create the games so they can play with their children at home.

ABCs workshops will be held from 2-2:45 p.m., and PACT 1 & 2 workshops will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. Dates and locations for each workshop are as follows:
