Imlay City alums want to save grandstands

IMLAY CITY -- The Imlay City Alumni Association hopes to save the grandstand at Grettenberger Field and is planning a community-wide restoration project.

The Imlay City Community Schools Board of Education agreed not to demolish the grandstand at the April 28 regular meeting. Instead, it was decided to go with a restoration project.

"This structure is unique for athletic fields in the state of Michigan and has historical value as one of the projects completed under the Roosevelt administration's Works Progress Administration," Marilyn Swihart, Imlay City School Alumni Association secretary wrote in a letter to Superintendent Gary Richards and the Imlay City Schools Board of Education. "The association is willing to spearhead a campaign to raise funds for the restoration project and arrange for volunteer labor."

Swihart said sentimentality over the grandstands has been running rampant in Imlay City. Several alumni living outside the area have stated they're willing to financially assist with the project. She also said little league has expressed an interest in working with the association on the project.

"Restoration of this grand old grandstand certainly would preserve the tradition of providing excellent facilities for our athletes and maintain the legacy of many graduates," Swihart wrote. "We are confident we can raise the necessary funds to see the completion of the restoration and we encourage you to consider our offer."
