Tuesday was filing deadline for Aug. 5 primary election

LAPEER COUNTY -- Tuesday was filing deadline for the Aug. 5 primary election for candidates interested in running for office, and while there was no influx of people through the doors this week there is no shortage of people to challenge for seats. Nearly every elected county office seat faces a challenger, while there are seven Republican candidates for the 82nd District seat in the Michigan Legislature.

Lapeer County Prosecutor Byron J. Konschuh of Lapeer, a Republican, will be unchallenged in the primary, but will face Philip A. Fulks of North Branch for the county's top law position in the general election.

Ron Kalanquin of Lapeer, the county's sheriff, will be challenged by Dale Jenkins, also of Lapeer, in the Republican primary.

Incumbent Treasurer Sally Eilersen of Almont will be challenged in the Republican primary by Dana M. Miller of Lapeer, the current treasurer of Mayfield Township. The winner will face off against Michele Perry of North Branch, Democrat, in the general election.

Incumbent Republican County Road Commissioner Dale Duckert of Imlay City will compete in the August primary against Jerry W. Hudson. The winner will run against Democrat Larry Van Horn of Lapeer in the general election.

Marlene M. Bruns, of Lapeer, county clerk; Melissa R. DeVaugh of Metamora, register of deeds; John Cosens of Lapeer, drain commissioner; and Ray Davis of Columbiaville, county surveyor, are all incumbent Republicans and are unopposed in the primary.

Lapeer County Commission Chairman Dave Taylor of Metamora will square off in the Republican primary against recently retired Metamora Police officer David Eady. Incumbent county Commissioners Dyle G. Henning of Lapeer, Lenny Schneider of Lapeer, Linda M. Jarvis of Metamora, Gary Roy of Imlay City, and Ian Kempf of Imlay City, all Republicans; and Cheryl A. Clark of Columbiaville, a Democrat, are all unopposed.Ê

In what's expected to be a hotly contested care, seven Republican candidates will face off against each other in the primary: Todd A. Courser of Silverwood, Kevin Daley of Attica, Gary Howell of North Branch, Randy St. Laurent of Lapeer, Paul St. Louis of Lapeer, John J. Stack of Attica, and Benjamin Stahl of Lapeer. That primary's winner will square off against the Democratic candidate in a field of three candidates: Jason Blauet of Metamora, Bernard Anthony Jocuns Jr. of North Branch, and Bill Marquardt of Lapeer.

The 82nd District seat will become vacant after the current term because current State Rep. John Stahl, R-Arcadia Township -- Benjamin's father -- will have to step down due to term limits. He is serving his third and final two-year term in office.
