LAPEER -- Along with a new look and purpose, E.E. Irwin Elementary School on Second Street is getting a new name.

At its May 8 meeting, the Lapeer Community Schools Board of Education approved renaming the building the Administration and Services Center.

However, the historic name of E.E. Irwin is not leaving the building. Board members decided to name their new meeting room, in what is a multi-purpose room of Irwin Elementary School, the E.E. Irwin Board Room.

Irwin was superintendent of Lapeer schools from 1914-1946. A plaque designating the naming of Irwin Elementary School was erected in 1952 and used bricks taken from the original White House in Washington, D.C.

The LCS decided to renovate the Irwin building to accommodate its administrative offices after the district sold its former administration building at the northwest corner of M-24 and Genesee Street for $1.8 million to a developer that is currently building a Rite Aid pharmacy on the site.

A ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the renovated Irwin facility is planned for June.
