DRYDEN TWP -- Though the warm season is off to a slow start, the Lapeer County Parks are planning a summer of sunshine.

With gas prices soaring to new highs, local parks are expecting a large turn-out this summer.

"I'm encouraging people to get out locally whether it's the county parks or any of the other parks in the area," said Lapeer County Park's Director Ken Elwert.

Summer hours begin June 6. Both General Squier Memorial Park and Torzewski County Park will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Picnicking, nature trails, playgrounds, horseshoes, and volleyball are just a few of the activities available at both.

A universally accessible kayak launch is in the works for Torzewski County Park; it will hopefully be up and working by next summer, said Elwert.

Both the Millrace water park at General Squier Memorial Park and the Wetlands water park at Torzewski County Park will open on the weekend of June 6-8. Both water parks will be closed June 9-12 and will open for the summer seven days a week starting June 13; hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The water parks will be open every day through Sept. 1, but may close due to cool or inclement weather. For water park status due to weather, call the water park hotlines: Torzewski County Park at (810) 664-6901 and General Squier Memorial Park at (810) 796-2380.
