Softball: Oxford earns split with East



LAPEER -- Lapeer East and Oxford split a Flint Metro League doubleheader here on Thursday, as the Eagles won the first game by a score of 5-3 before the Wildcats stormed back in the nightcap to get the win by a final of 15-2.

In Game 1, Lapeer East (2-6 FML) scored four times in the bottom of the first to get the early lead. Katie Ayres had the big hit for the Eagles driving in two runs on a single. East scored again in the third after Oxford scored once in the top of the inning. The Wildcats would add two more in the seventh before East pitcher Katy Peacock would shut the door on the Oxford defense. Peacock ended up pitching a complete game, striking out nine while scattering six hits. Only one of the three runs scored by Oxford was charged to Peacock. Jessie Johnson led the East offense in Game 1, going 2-for 4.

For Oxford, Corinne Luxton also pitched a complete game, fanning seven while issuing just four walks. Luxton was also 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI for Oxford (1-9 FML).

In the nightcap, walks allowed Oxford to get the early lead, as the Wildcats scored nine runs between the first and second innings to take the 9-2 lead over the Eagles. The Wildcat bats also woke up, as Oxford pounded out 11 games in their Game 2 win. Chelsea Kessler, Allie Laidlaw and Alyssa Hurtado all had two hits and Luxton added two RBIs on a homerun. Luxton also picked up the win, striking out three in three innings.

Mandy Wallington and Leanna Milks had the only hits for Lapeer East in Game 2.

Around the horn LakeVille 13-18, Durand 0-0: In Otisville, LakeVille's Brooke Terwilliger homered twice and had a total of five hits, as the Falcons swept a pair of Genesee Area Red Division games from the Railroaders on Thursday. With the wins, LakeVille moved its overall record to 23-3 (13-0 GAC Red).
Terwilliger picked up nine RBIs while Sarah Wright finished with five hits and one homer along with five RBIs. Jordyn Kippe had four hits and four RBIs. Hayley Barden was the winning pitcher in Game 1, tossing a one-hitter. In Game 2, Jennie Price hurled a four-hitter and had three hits, including a homerun, and drove in five runs.

Goodrich 10-14, Lake Fenton 1-3: In Goodrich, the Martians (18-2, 8-0) swept a pair of GAC games from the Blue Devils on Thursday. Brooke Zimmerman picked up the win in the opener, striking out four over seven innings. Megan Smith led the offense, going 4-for-5 while scoring twice. Zimmerman added two hits and four RBIs and Sunny Mihalak was 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the win.
Smith was the pitcher of record in the nightcap, striking out four while allowing just four hits. Kortni Elsworth ended 4-for-4 with three RBIs, Emily England was 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Casey Baker and Brittany Bertrand each added two hits for Goodrich.

Lapeer West 11-4, Linden 1-0: In Lapeer, Bridgett Miller fanned eight while surrendering just three hits and one walk for West (19-4, 10-0) as the Panthers would go on to take a pair of Metro League games from the Eagles on Thursday. Miller also added two hits and a homerun. Alyssa Sharrard and Kayleigh Richmond both had three hits in the Game 1 win.
Sharrard picked up the win in the nightcap, finishing with 10 strikeouts. Debbie England and Kim Brown both had two hits and one RBI in Game 2.

Brown City 3-11, Mayville 1-1: At Mayville, the Green Devils won a pair of Greater Thumb East conference games over the Wildcats on Thursday. Kristen Greene picked up both wins, throwing a complete game with four strikeouts in the opener. Greene also scored the winning run in the sixth, as the sophomore scored on a base hit by Jamie Clark. Greene also doubled home a run and Michelle Burgess scored twice for Brown City. Sara Barteld led Mayville (12-11) with two hits.
In Game 2, Greene pitched five innings, striking out five. Brown City (23-1, 10-0 GTE) put the game away with a six-run third inning offensive outburst. Sandi Oligney had three hits and five RBIs while scoring three times and Amanda Oligney had a triple and an RBI for the Green Devils.

Marlette 1-0, USA 2-17: In Unionville, the Red Raiders missed pulling off the upset in the opener over the state-ranked Patriots before falling in the finale as well in a two-game, non-conference sweep on Thursday. In Game 1, Marlette (11-9, 5-3 GTE) scored in the sixth to tie the game at 1-1 before a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh allowed USA (17-4) to get the win. Caitlin King took the loss for Marlette. Kryssy Skakle and Jenna Thompson both had doubles for the Raiders.

King had the lone hit in the nightcap for Marlette.

Brandon 1-0, Fenton 6-4: At Fenton, the Tigers took a pair of Flint Metro League games from the Blackhawks on Thursday. Kim Michal led Brandon with three hits.
