Mother gone, but never forgotten

LAPEER -- Gerry Roberts recalls her late mother everyday of the year, not only on Mother's Day.

Roberts' late mother, Emma Klein died in 2002 -- one day shy of turning age 101, but misses her everyday.

"I always had my mother, Emma Klein," she said. "I've always had wonderful Mother's Days with my mother."

Roberts, a Lapeer resident, recalled her mother was a seamstress and noted that sewing is a talent that has been passed down through the generations. Her mother also liked cards, crafts, and doting over her grandchildren.

"Perhaps I was like her. We were together so often. I was very happy I was able to take care of her. She had congestive heart failure and was weak," Roberts said. "Mom was with me so much. She spoiled me with sewing. What I learned about sewing I learned from her."

Klein was a Hillman (east of Gaylord) native, but moved to Pontiac and was a seamstress there for several stores.

Roberts said her mother was well honored at her 100th birthday complete with cake and a limousine ride, and added it was well deserved on such a milestone day.

Another special day, Roberts recalled, was when she attended a class reunion with her mother at Hillman High School. The duo both graduated from the school.

"I think of her all the time and always want to tell mother something. If she was here I'd tell her I love her and miss her," she said. "She was a dear friend and was a helpmate when my children were growing up."

"We used to have such happy trips that were nice and she was a fun person," she said.

Roberts' mother will be on her mind today (Mother's Day). Roberts' son, Neil, will visit her at her home in Devonshire Retirement Village in Lapeer. But her mother's memory never wanders far from her heart.
