The ranks of the hungry in Michigan are growing as more and more families are impacted by unemployment in these challenging economic times. Things are tough and kids are feeling it where it hurts—their tummies.

"Many children eat breakfast and lunch at school during the year," said Ken Shall, postmaster at the Almont Post Office, "and then have nothing to replace it when school lets out. This food drive fills the cupboards for the summer months." He added that the elderly often suffer as well, as their fixed incomes are stretched to accommodate rising costs of basic necessities.

Every person with a mailbox can participate in the 15th annual food drive, which is part of the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

"If we can get everyone to give something," said Shall, "we'll make a huge difference in the lives of families in our community."

Items such as canned tuna and chicken and peanut butter are particularly helpful, but any canned or boxed food is acceptable.

"Pick up a few extra items as you grocery shop," said Shall. "Or take some cans off your shelf. Just don't forget to set them out on Saturday. We'll make sure they stamp out hunger in our community."
