Brown City girls power way to Sanilac County title



CARSONVILLE -- The Brown City softball team ran its overall record to 19-1 with a pair of victories here Saturday in the annual Sanilac County softball tournament.

Brown City advanced to the finals with a dominating 15-0 five inning victory over Sandusky in the semifinals. In the finals, the Green Devils easily handled Deckerville, defeating the Eagles by a score of 10-1 to earn the county title. Brown City had not won the Sanilac County title since 2005.

Sophomore Kristen Greene picked up the win in both games. Greene hurled a two-hitter while striking out four against Sandusky in the semifinals. Michelle Burgess had two hits, scored three runs and had an RBI. Greene added two hits and three RBIs, Emily Kalbfleisch had two singles with three RBIs and Jamie Clark had a triple, scored two runs and drove in two in the semifinal win over Sandusky.

In the finals, Greene tossed a four-hitter and fanned 11 Deckerville batters while not allowing an earned run. Greene also provided some fireworks at the plate, as the sophomore blasted a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Mary Miller finished with two hits and an RBI while Amanda Oligney had a triple and an RBI in the finals for Brown City.

Lapeer West 2, Trenton 3

At the Michigan Stars Classic Tourney on Sunday, Lapeer West went 1-2 on the day, winning their first game over Waterford Mott before falling twice.
Against Mott, Alyssa Sharrard picked up the win, striking out seven while throwing a three-hitter. Sharrard added three hits and Bridget MIller had two.
Emily Jones, Debbie England and Rachel Grobbel each had a hit and an RBI in the win.

Against Ladywood, the Panthers took an early 4-0 lead before Ladywood came back with three in third and four in the fifth to get the win. Sharrard took the loss as the West defense committed five errors. Miller had three hits and four RBIs along with a two-run homerun in the sixth. Jones and Kim Brown each added two hits.

In the Panthers third game against Trenton, Miller took the loss despite not allowing an earned run. The West defense once again had a rough game, committing six errors in the one-run loss. Miller had a hit and an RBI.

Lapeer West 2, Romeo 5
Lapeer West 6, L'Anse Creuse North 0
At the Michigan Stars Classic Tournament on Saturday, Lapeer West split a pair of games. The Panthers lost first to Romeo, 5-2, despite a one-hitter from pitcher Alyssa Sharrard. Emily Jones drove in two runs on one hit.
Against L'Anse Cruese, Bridgett Miller was the winning pitcher, striking out 12 and scattering two hits over five innings of work. Miller added a two-run homer in the second. Debbie England had three hits and two RBIs and Rachel Grobbell had two hits in the win for West.

Dryden 7-5, Caseville 6-6
In Caseville, the Cardinals split a pair of NCTL games with the Eagles last Thursday.
In Game 1, Natalie Maynard picked up the win, striking out six while walking just three in seven innings. Sarah DeCeuninck doubled in the seventh, scoring two. Maynard followed that with a single, scoring DeCeuninck for the win.
In Game 2, Caseville scored twice in the sixth to earn the split.

Marlette 9-5, Sandusky 1-7
In Sandusky, the Red Raiders split a doubleheader with the Redskins on Thursday.
Caitlin King fanned 11 in the opener while allowing just two hits.
Marlette scored their nine runs in the first three innings behind the hitting of Lisa Gerstenberger (3-for-4, RBI), Kayla Brown (3-for-3) and Jenna Lange (2-for-4, RBI).
In Game 2, Marlette (11-5, 5-1 GTE) fell behind late, as Sandusky scored twice in the eighth inning to get the win. King struck out five in eight innings. Brown, Lange and Katie Clark each had a hit in the loss.

Imlay City 1-2, Utica 8-7
In Utica, the Spartans lost twice in non-conference action from last Thursday.
In the opener, Imlay City's Mikayla Pardon struck out 11 in six innings but could not get the win.
Brianna Jackman was 2-for-3 in the loss.
In Game 2, the Spartans scored just once in the second inning. Pardon was 2-for-3 and pitched the final two innings.

Imlay City 7, Capac 1
At Capac, the Spartans handed the Chiefs a BWAC loss on Wednesday. Leah Rankin, Mikayla Pardon, Tera Volmering and Miranda Steffler each had two hits in the win for Imlay City (5-8, 4-2 BWAC).
