West dominates East in girls softball



LAPEER -- Lapeer West rode the arm of Alyssa Sharrard to get a twinbill sweep over crosstown rival Lapeer East on Thursday. West won the first game by a score of 9-1 before later taking the nightcap by a final of 12-6.

Kim Brown had three hits and three RBIs in the Game 1 win for West (13-1, 6-0 Flint Metro League) while Sharrard had two hits and Debbie England added a two-run homerun. England and Sharrard added two more hits in the finale. Mandy Wallington had two hits in the Game 2 loss for East (1-15, 1-5).

LakeVille 6-5, Mt. Morris 5-0: At Mt. Morris, the Falcons (17-3, 10-0 GAC) kept their league record perfect after a two-game sweep of the Panthers on Thursday. Sarah Wright finished the day with seven hits, including a three-run homer, and six RBIs. Brooke Terwilliger had four hits, including the game-winning homerun in Game 1. Stacy Hillock added four hits on the day. Jenny Price threw a two-hitter in Game 2.

Goodrich 9-10, Montrose 3-0: At Montrose, the Martians took a pair of GAC-Red division game from the Rams on Thursday. Kortni Elsworth had five hits and three RBIs and scored twice to lead Goodrich. Brittany Bertrand and Alisha Fischer each added four hits and Brooke Zimmerman scattered seven hits while striking out seven to the Game 1 win. Megan Smith tossed a two-hitter and struck out six to get the Game 2 win.

Mayville 0-11, Deckerville 8-5: At Deckerville, the Wildcats split a Greater Thumb East doubleheader with the Eagles on Thursday, losing the opener before later coming back to win in the nightcap. Sarah Dunham had two hits in Game 1. In Game 2, Sara Barteld picked up the win while also adding two hits. Amy Elenbaum led with three hits while Chelsea Roehl had a triple and a single for Mayville (12-7, 2-4 GTE).

Brown City 9-13, Ubly 4-3: At Ubly, Kristen Greene pitched her team to the twinbill sweep over the Bearcats in Greater Thumb East action from Thursday. Greene struck out six in the opener, allowing just three hits. Michelle Burgess scored twice and had an RBI, Greene smacked a two-run homerun along with a single and Mandy Miller had two hits and a run scored.
Greene tossed a five-hitter in the nightcap. Sandi Oligney had a double and two RBIs in Game 2, Burgess had three hits and three RBIs, Greene added three hits and two RBIs and Katlyn Petitpren scored twice and had an RBI for Brown City (17-1, 6-0 GTE).

North Branch 7-8, Garber 2-2: At North Branch, the Broncos swept a pair of Tri-Valley East games over the Dukes on Thursday. Emily Wickerman allowed just three hits without issuing a walk while picking up the in Game 1. Shanel Johnstone led the Broncos offense, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the win. In Game 2, Wickerman struck out three while picking up the win. Noel Byers hit a two-run homerun and Tonya Calkins added a three-run homer for the Broncos. Johnstone ended the evening with six RBIs for North Branch (14-5, 5-1).
