Lapeer West golf team recaptures the Hickory Stick

LAPEER -- The Lapeer West golf team shot a team-low 158 to win the annual competition for 'The Hickory Stick'. West outshot Lapeer East, who shot a 159, and Flint-Kearsley (169), who had held the trophy for the past two years.

Medalist for the match was Mitchell Morris from Lapeer East, who shot a 2-under par score of 33, including seven pars and two birdies. Morris' round was the lowest in the 11-year career of East coach Dave Speirs.

Lapeer West was led Brian McGeary, who shot a team-best 37. Ian Korciak was next for West with a 38.

Competing in the play 6-count 4 format, East and West were tied at 159 after the first four groups came in. While East did not improve with its last two golfers, West received a 42 from senior Jake Acton, which allowed the Panthers to drop a stroke and win the match. The results fulfilled a pre-match prophecy by West Coach Tim Bradley, who stated that "The Stick is coming back to Lapeer this year."

The Hickory Stick is an antique hickory-shafted putter originally donated by Mike Parker, golf coach at Imlay City. The competition was originally between Imlay City, Lapeer East, and Lapeer West, but scheduling difficulties prevented the Spartans from continuing.
