Local News PUBLISHED:
That's when the school election will find ballots filled with two board of education races, non-homestead millages in Almont, Dryden, Imlay City, and Lapeer, and a bond issue in Dryden: Almont Community Schools A non-homestead millage awaits voters in Almont. The district will ask for the ballot issue with revenue going to operations under Proposal A. As part of the non-homestead millage, businesses need to pay 18 mills as a base amount, which is non homestead. The millage only costs business owners including those that are commercial, industrial, rental homes, or qualified agricultural properties. Almont will ask voters for a two-year operational millage proposition and means about $1.135 million of the district's operational budget. Also in Almont, two seats are available on the Board of Education. The challengers are incumbent John Miles, former board member Steven V. Hoffa, and Trisha Swantek, Laura Gutenkunst, and Chris Krim. Dryden Community Schools Dryden voters will be asked to consider two propositions. The first will be a non-homestead operational millage renewal for two years that equates to $599,900 in operational revenue. The second proposition is a 2.24-mill bond issue to address building needs throughout the district. Two incumbent Dryden Board of Education trustees are unopposed. Incumbents John W. Powell and Marti Riley will face no opposition. Imlay City Community Schools The Imlay City Community Schools are also asking for voters to give permission for the district to levy the maximum 21 mills as a renewal. For the Imlay City school district, it means $2.393 million of the district's operational budget. Board of Education incumbents Eric Thuma and Sharon Muir are running unopposed. Lapeer Community Schools The Lapeer Community Schools will also ask voters to consider a non-homestead millage. For LCS, it equals about 13% of the budget -- $6.984 million. For two seats on the Board of Education, incumbent Board President WIlliam A. Laidlaw and Trustee Michael Nolan will face no opposition. North Branch Area Schools In a hotly contested election, two seats in the North Branch Area Schools Board of Education are up for grabs. Incumbents Board President Gary Manthei Jr. and Board Secretary Lorrelei A. Natke are being challenged by newcomers Richard Pratt, Jerry Schlaud, and Cory Mabery.
