IC Cops find bomb at station

IMLAY CITY - Imlay City Police Chief John Stano received a surprise when spring cleaning at the station Monday.

Stano located a hand grenade at 2 p.m. in a secured property locker. The police chief treated the grenade, which looked like a pineapple- or lemon-styled bomb, as if it were live. Stano checked with Lt. Roger Czap and other police personnel, but nobody knew where the grenade came from.

Stano has been chief for a few months.

"I was slowly going around the building and called the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad," Stano said. "I was unsure if it was real and the pin was still in the grenade. It's the last thing I'd expect to find in a police station. It looked like a hand grenade from a World War II movie.

"The state police took the grenade to a gravel pit north of town where they disposed of it at 5 p.m.," Stano said.

There were no injuries from the incident.

Stano searched the rest of the police station, but did not find any similar devices.
