LAPEER TWP - Maple Grove Elementary School was officially named a "Michigan Green School" Tuesday morning.
To meet the 10 points required for the green school designation, students and staff participated in a birdhouse habitat project, recycled magazines and newspapers, participated in an energy savings initiative through the district and hosted a recycling assembly with Rick Rhein Disposal of Lapeer.
Also, the Lapeer County Community Foundation approved a grant through the Youth Advisory Council to Maple Grove to start a student-operated recycling program.
The Lapeer Community Schools building received a flag Tuesday and was certified by the Genesee Intermediate School District through the Michigan Green Schools Act of May 2006.
