LAPEER - Lapeer East junior shortstop Mike Carson had a total of six hits, including three homeruns, in a doubleheader sweep of Birch Run on Wednesday. The Eagles won the first game by a score of 11-1 before later taking the nightcap by a tally of 16-5. Carson hit two homeruns in the first game and went deep again in Game 2 to lead Lapeer East (3-1) to the twinbill sweep over the Panthers. All six of Carson's hits for the evening were for extra bases. The junior added three doubles to go with his three roundtrippers. Carson had a total of eight RBIs for the day. Jamie Logan and Bobby Frey each added four hits for East. Austin Muir added three hits. Matt Kelly led Birch Run with three hits on the day.
Around the horn - Thursday Lapeer West 10-3, Kearsley 0-1: At Flint, Lapeer West pitchers Richie Lee and Logan Tigner each tossed six-hitters in a twinbill sweep over the Hornets on Thursday. Lee struck out eight in the opener and was helped along by Jon Andresik's solo homer.
North Branch 3-4, Swan Valley 6-7: At North Branch, the Broncos surrendered four runs in the top of the second in Game 1 on their way to the loss. North Branch responded with two runs in the third, but it was not enough. In the nightcap, Swan Valley overcame an early 4-0 lead by North Branch to get the doubleheader sweep. Mike Broooks was 3-for-4 in Game 2 for North Branch and had a total of four hits on the day. Dennis Natke added three hits total while Luke Bonner was 2-for-2 in Game 2 for the Broncos.
Brandon 9-2, Carman-Ainsworth 6-3: At Flint Township, Brandon's Quinn McNally picked up the win for the Blackhawks in Game 1, pitching 4 1/3 innings. Max Cotton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Nick Russin has two hits and an RBI and Tait McNally stole three bases and had one hit. In Game 2, the game was called after five innings due to darkness with Brandon (3-2-1) picking up the loss. The Cavaliers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth to get the win. Aric Bekaert was Brandon's only standout going 2-for-2 with a double and a single.
Goodrich 12-12, Mt. Morris 2-4: At Goodrich, the Martians pounded out 26 hits in a doubleheader sweep against the Panthers on Thursday. With both wins, Goodrich (7-0, 4-0 GAC) jumped to a lead in the conference standings, as they are looking for the school's 11th baseball league title in the past 13 seasons. Steve Hughes had six hits on the day and reached base eight out of nine times to lead Goodrich's offense. The leadoff hitter was 4-for-4 with four RBIs in the first game, when the Martians totaled 14 hits.
LakeVille 17-16, Lake Fenton 5-5: At Otisville, the Falcons continued to score runs, remaining unbeaten in the process with the sweep of the Blue Devils on Thursday. Zac Snider totaled four hits, including two homeruns, and had four RBIs between the two games.
Davison 8-3, Heritage 6-5: At Saginaw, Trever Cousineau had three doubles to lead the Cardinals to victory over the Hawks in Game 1. Jared Cowan had a total of six hits on the day, including a three-run homerun, with four RBIs.
Mayville 0-4, USA 5-9: At Mayville, the Wildcats got a solid pitching performance from Brett Beckett in Game 1 yet were never able to get the momentum to win. Justin Lugowski had two hits in the opener. In Game 2, Lugowski added two more hits and Matt Cook had two hits with a double and an RBI in the loss.
Around the horn - Wednesday Imlay City 11, Cros-Lex 5: At Croswell, the Spartans' Ryan Pitt picked up the win in relief of starter Mark Owen. Pitt struck out nine over four innings of work and allowed just two hits. Imlay City pounded out a total of 17 hits in the game. Kevin Ahrens had three hits and an RBI. Blaine Goertler had three hits with a double, Justin Pitt added three hits and a double, Devon Wigers had two double and four RBIs and Steve Lesniak had a homerun and two RBIs for Imlay City (2-0, 1-0 BWAC).
Brown City 18-14, Peck 4-0: In Peck, the Green Devils scored 32 runs in a doubleheader sweep over the Pirates on Wednesday. Game 1 was a qualifying game for the Sanilac County Tournament, and Brown City scored fifteen runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings to pull out the win. Ryan Hoff was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Kevin Kalbfliesch, Justin Holsworth and Aaron Bullock all added three hits. Holsworth picked up the win. In Game 2, Brown City scored ten times in the third inning to put the game away. BC pitcher Aaron Bullock threw a no-hitter, striking out seven in four innings of play. Hoff once again led at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
