Three games into the 2008 season and Brown City is still unbeaten. And this is something that greatly pleases coach Erin Snyder. "This was a good cross-over game for us," Snyder said of the doubleheader win over Bad Axe. "I thought the girls came out and played some really good defense for us tonight. "They did a great job staying focused especially for how cold it was out there." The cool air may have had some effect on a few players on the Brown City softball diamond Thursday, but the cool spring air hardly seemed to bother Brown City pitcher Kristen Greene. Greene struck out nine Bad Axe hitters and allowed just two hits over six innings in the opener before hurling a no-hitter in Game 2. In that game, Greene fanned five Hatchets hitters and picked up her third win of the season in just three innings of work. "Kristen did a great job of mixing her pitches," Snyder said. "She did a great job of keeping the Bad Axe hitters off guard." In the opener, Amanda Oligney drove in two runs and had two stolen bases and scored a run. Michelle Burgess added a stolen base and a run. Kayla Cain was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. In the nightcap, Greene aided her own cause at the plate, leading the Green Devil offense by going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Katlyn Petitpren drive in three runs while Oligney added a single and a stolen base in the 8-0 win. The Green Devils next play on Monday, April 14 at Cass City.
Other scores Mayville 9-7, Laker 4-3: At Mayville, the Lady Wildcats moved their overall record to 4-0 with a twinbill sweep of EPBP on Thursday. Leading Mayville's offense was Chelsea Roehl with three hits. Amy Elenbaum and Sarah Dunham added two hits. Elenbaum and Dunham also shared pitching responsibilities with each picking up a win from the mound in the doubleheader.
Wednesday's scores Marlette 8-16, C-PS 0-1: At Marlette, the Red Raiders overpowered Carsonville-Port Sanilac on their way to a doubleheader sweep of the Tigers on Wednesday. Marlette (2-0) used the pitching of senior Caitlin King to lead the way in both games. In Game 1, King struck out 10 while allowing just two hits to preserve the shutout. Kayla Brown and Kryssy Skakle each drove in two runs while Jenna Lange, Kayla Roberts and Jenna Thompson each had two hits in the opener. In Game 2, Marlette put seven runs on the board in the top of the first and added six more in the second on their way to the four inning mercy win. King struck out three in just two innings in the nightcap. Kayla Brown led the offense in Game 2, going 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs and a homerun. Lisa Gerstenberger added two RBIs and two hits in the win.
