Lady Martians romp past Genesee

GOODRICH - Not a bad start for a team that was supposed to be rebuilding.

First year Goodrich softball head coach Bob Morgan was supposed to charged with rebuilding a Goodrich team this season that has gone 69-10-1 overall in the past two seasons and 30-4 in 2007.

From the looks of how the Martians played in their season opener on Monday, it looks as though Morgan has gotten the job done a little earlier than expected.

Goodrich used their bats to jump all over Genesee, as the Martians built a huge lead before claiming a 15-0 win over the Wolves in non-conference action.

Junior hurler Megan Smith, who compiled an 8-0 record with an 0.87 ERA in 2007, picked right up where she left off from a year ago. Smith pitched a three-inning one-hitter and kept the Wolves off the scoreboard, as she held on for the shutout in the mercy win.

Sophomore Sunny Mahalak led the offensive charge for the Martians with three hits and three RBIs. Senior third baseman Kortni Elsworth, who last season batted .469 with 60 hits and 52 RBIs, showed she is ready for her final campaign in a Goodrich uniform with a solid performance on Monday. Elsworth had two hits, one a double, with two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Senior outfielder Courtney Brejnak added two hits for Goodrich (1-0).

Goodrich was slated to travel to Yale on Thursday, April 10, for a doubleheader.
