GOODRICH - It didn't take coach Bob Foreback's team very long to make a statement as to what opponents can expect from them this season.

If Monday's home opener against Genesee was any inclination as to how good the Martians are going to be this season, the one word that could be used to describe is explosive.

Goodrich outhit and outplayed the Wolves in non-conference action, as the Martians used their offense to claim a 10-0 opening game win at home over Genesee. Goodrich outhit Genesee 11-1 while also taking advantage of six walks which came courtesy of the Genesee pitchers. All in all, not a bad way start the 2008 season.

"Opening day at Goodrich was good to the Martians," Foreback, who has led the Martians to a 364-131 record in 13 seasons, said. "Luke Harrison pitched well. We some good hits.

"Overall, it was a good day."

Harrison got the starting nod in the first game for Goodrich. The junior righthander fanned eight batters while walking just two. He allowed just one hit over four complete innings and left the game with a 7-0 lead.

Harrison also helped his own cause at the plate. He was 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate.

Goodrich's Bobby Short was the catalyst behind the Martians first scoring rally. Short drew a walk from Genesee pitcher Daniel Smith, which gave Goodrich the leadoff man on first with no outs in the bottom of the second. Short stole second, moved to third on Joe Zito's single and later scored on a passed ball to give the Martians a 1-0 lead. Zito moved to second on the play and later scored on Kyle Fitch's RBI single. Steve Hughes completed the scoring in the second with a single, which scored Fitch, giving Goodrich a 3-0 lead after two innings of play.

Short started the rally again in the next inning. The sophomore led off with a single, stole second again and later scored on Harrison's RBI single. Fitch followed with a SAC fly, which scored Zito to give Goodrich a 5-0 advantage. Harrison later scored on a fielder's choice to put his team up by six runs at the completion of three innings.

Dustin Smith led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple. Two batters later, Zito flew out to deep centerfield, which allowed Smith to score to give Goodrich a 7-0 lead. Steven Worley led off the fifth with a single and later scored on a Brett Johnson RBI single. Smith added an RBI sacrifice fly in the same inning. Caleb Jones finished the 10-0 mercy for Goodrich when he singled home Zito in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Short ended 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Hughes was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Fitch was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBIs.

The second game was called due to darkness with Goodrich leading 12-1 after four innings.
