Brandon competitive cheer team wins Flint Metro League title



ORTONVILLE — With their highest score of the season, and by scoring the highest score in team history, the Brandon Blackhawks competitive cheer squad has claimed the championship in the Flint Metro League for the 2007-08 sports season.

The Lady Blackhawks scored a total of 2,068.212, a score which was accumulated from a total of three league tournaments, and the scores from those tournaments are then added together and a champion named from the highest point total. In one meet, the Lady Blackhawks scored a school-record 728.608 points.

This is just the fifth year that Brandon Cheer has competed in the MHSAA Competitive Cheer format, and coach Jamie Slot says that the team has accomplished an awful lot in such a short time.

"This team has been absolutely unbelievable this season," Slot said. "Their drive and teamwork is truly incredible.

"They are a great group of athletes to work with."

Coming in second place in the Metro League was Lapeer West, who had grand total of 2,047.174. Oxford rounded out the top three with a score of 1,969.517.

Receiving First Team All League honors were: Jessica Fahr, Emily Murphy, Talana Pearson, Brittany LeMesurrier and Jill Brendel.

Second Team honors went to Danielle Snyder, Bethany Harding, Jackie Broders and Colleen Brendel. Kallie Zardus was the lone Blackhawk named Honorable Mention.

Out of the nine competitions held this season, the Brandon Cheer Team won first place seven times.
