Area wrestlers qualify for Individual State Finals



LINDEN — Several Lapeer County area wrestlers qualified for the Indvidual State Finals this past Saturday. The Individual State Finals will be held on Saturday, March 6-8, at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

At the Regional qualifying round on Saturday at Linden High School, Lapeer East's Philip Joseph remained undefeated on the season. Joseph, who wrestles at 160, won the Division 2 Region 5 title with a pin of Flint-Kearsley's Yacoub Abuhanna at the 3:36 mark of the final match.

Joining Joseph as a Regional champion is teammate Jarrett Starr. Starr, who competes at 285, won an 8-6 decision over Oxford's Dylan Smith in the regional final match.

Oxford's Zach Line (215) also took top honors at Linden. Line defeated Marquette's Stosh Wasik with a pin at 2:49 of the 215 finals.

Other Division 2 State qualifiers who took second-place honors on Saturday include Oxford's Matt Frisch (112) and Dylan Smith.

Lapeer West's Cory Krings (152) grabbed a second place finish to qualify for the state finals.

In Division 4, five wreslters from Mayville qualified for the state finals, led by Jullian Williams. Williams (285), who was the lone Wildcat wrestler to win a Regional crown and became just the third Mayville wrestler ever to win a Regional title.

"Jullian made short work of his opponents," Mayville coach Mark Cooper said. "All of his pins were in less than one minute."

The other Mayville qualifiers were Corey O'Kelly (103), Lee Tippett (125), Jake Simpson (160) and Nate Richardson (189).

Marlette had three wrestlers qualify for the individual finals. Last season's State Champ at 119, Marlette's Jon Hayward, finished in third at 119 at New Lothrop. Hayward's regular season record is now 47-5.

Jordan Hayward (140) ran his record to 51-5 with a third place finish while Joel Swenson (145) picked up his 36th win of the season on Saturday and finished in fourth place.

Andre Sanson was the lone qualifier for Brown City. Sanson (135) now has a 40-6 record on the season and ended up in second place at New Lothrop on Saturday.
