Local News PUBLISHED:
Problems began at 8:37 p.m. Sunday on Oregon Street in Lapeer. A road rage incident between a Lapeer man, 18, in a red Chevrolet Cavalier and Johnson and his passenger grew into a verbal argument and a physical confrontation. Lapeer City Police officer Monica Bogdan stopped the driver of the Cavalier who suffered injuries to his head. He advised Bogdan and Michigan State Police trooper Scott Reynolds that he'd been passed by a teal Chevrolet Cavalier driving speeds in excess of 90 mph. "He and the occupants of that vehicle were involved in a road rage incident," said Lapeer City Police Lt. Dave Frisch. "They stopped and a verbal argument became physical. The driver in the red car had the hammer and the driver of the teal car had a pipe." A fight ensued and the driver of the red Cavalier was struck with a pipe. The three men were involved in an altercation using fists. As Johnson drove away following the incident, the driver of the red car is suspected of breaking out his side car window with a hammer. The pipe victim was transported to Lapeer Regional Medical Center for treatment. The teal car became stuck in a snow bank and Johnson and his passenger were arrested by Bogdan, Lapeer City Police Officer John Cipielewski and Sgt. Charles Bonesteel. At the police station, Johnson became confrontational and is suspected of assaulting a police officer and damaging a patrol car. He was arrested. A felonious assault warrant is being sought for the red car driver and simple assault and battery charges for the teal car passenger.
