"(Davison) did a good job on Kortni in the first half," Goodrich coach Jason Gray said. "She's also handling the ball a lot more now, so she's not getting the same looks as she was. "But she remained patient, made some nice moves, and got some big shots in the end." The next Martian trip down the court after the layup, Elsworth found the net again to cut the Cardinal lead to 31-27. Then, she nailed two freethrows, with six seconds left in overtime, to ice the game. Elsworth finished the game with seven points. "She's a great player," Gray said. "We're lucky to have her." Inexperience got the best of a Cardinal team that squandered a 12-point lead in the third quarter. "This loss has a lot to do with how inexperienced this team is," Davison coach Erika Ford said. "Like I said, we are young, we are building the program, but we see glimpses of greatness, we just have to get consistent." After a dismal first six minutes of the game for the Cardinals, they began to roll in the second. Brittany Bellamy single-handedly took over the game, as she had two blocks and two steals in the quarter. She also added eight points, which gave her eleven at the half, producing the same offensive output as the entire Goodrich team. Davison went into the locker room for halftime leading, 18-11. "She's a huge player for us. Definitely our MVP this year," Ford said. "She's just getting better and better, along with the whole team." In the second half, Davison went on a 9-4 run in the first six minutes of the third. To top off Goodrich's woes, Elsworth got into foul trouble when she picked up two quick fouls within 20 seconds of each other. She had to play the rest of the game with four fouls on her hands. In the fourth quarter, the Martians mounted a comeback. Its two best players, Elsworth and sophomore center Emily England, both in foul trouble, came off the bench with four minutes left in the game. Together, they completed the comeback. England hit a lay up with 1:02 left to make it a two-point game, 31-29. Goodrich finally tied the game up when Jolynn Zirnhelt hit a layup with 50 seconds left in the game. Neither teams could break the tie in regulation, so the game headed into overtime, tied 31-31. Davison suffered a huge loss with 1:48 left in overtime, when Bellamy fouled out. She left with a game-high 17 points and also had five blocks and three steals. With Bellamy sitting on the bench, the Cardinals were left to fend off Goodrich without its best player. England broke the tie again when she made two clutch freethrows with 38.9 seconds left in the game. England then stole the ball and Brittany Bertrand was fouled on the ensuing play. After making one of two freethrows, the Martians extended its lead to 37-34. Goodrich then committed a strategic foul to put Davison on the freethrow line, down by three with 10.7 seconds left on the clock. Davison only hit one of the two freethrows, which lead to the inevitable loss. "I told them it was a new game, we just wanted to win the tipoff and score first." Gray said. "Luckily, we had the momentum going into overtime.Ó England led Goodrich with 12 points. |
