Mayville wins Laker Team Tourney



MAYVILLE — After starting the season just 5-6, the Mayville wrestling team has moved its overall record to 22-9 (4-0 Greater Thumb Conference) after sweeping the Laker Team Tournament this past Saturday at Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port High School.

The Wildcats were a perfect 5-0 on the day. Saginaw Nouvel came in second, followed by Laker at third, Sanford-Meridian at fourth, North Branch in fifth and Swan Valley in sixth.

Mayville defeated Merdian 48-38, Nouvel by a score of 55-18, shut out the North Branch J.V. team 81-0, beat Laker 64-14 and handed the Swan Valley 'B' team a 76-6 defeat.

Four Wildcat wrestlers had a spotless 5-0 record on the day. Corey O'Kelly (103), Maxx Lieber (119), Lee Tippett (125/130), Derrick Parham (140/145), Jake Simpson (160) and Dylan Schenk (171) all recorded five wins in five matches while Jullian Williams (285) was 4-0 during the tourney.

"The kids performed really well," Mayville coach Mark Cooper said. "We wrestled some matches that are very important come District and League time.

"It was a good day for all the kids with the tournament schedule. We haven't had too many of these."

Two Mayville wrestlers were 4-1 for the tournament. Robbie Forys (112) and Nate Richardson (189/215) won four matches in five attempts. Kyle Perkins (125/130), Donny Bennett (135/140), Mark Leiber (152) and Eric Sansote (189/215) were all 3-2 during the tourney.

ÒThe kids are really wrestling at a pretty high level now,Ó Cooper said. ÒThe competition we have been throught the last month is really paying off.Ó

Broncos finish fifth

The North Branch wrestling team went 1-4 and took fifth place at SaturdayÕs Marysville Invitational.

The Broncos struggled at times during the tourney, but coach Jay Vesterman believes that things are looking up for his program. ÒOverall we are still showing improvement,Ó Vesterman said. ÒAnd the wrestlers are starting to gain more confidence in the program, which gives me hope for the future.Ó

North Branch won just once during the five game team tournament. The Broncos (11-25, 0-6 Tri-Valley East) defeated Memphis 56-24 after dropping four straight matches.
