West stays hot on ice



The Lapeer West Panther hockey team came out on top in two games last weekend — defeating Jenison on Friday by a score of 3-1, and took down Brandon on Saturday by the same score of 3-1.

On Friday, Jeff Yateman scored first for the Panthers at 4:40 in the first period. Nate Robson, assisted by Jacob Podgorski, scored in the second period at the 12:59 mark to give the Panthers a 2-0 edge.

Jenison got on the board at the 12:10 mark in the third period in a shorthanded goal by Jack Scanion, assisted by Josh McCarthy.

The Panthers weren't done yet, however, and took advantage of an empty net at the :10 mark with a goal by Jacob Podgorski, assisted by Nate Robson.

Between the poles for Lapeer West was Brandon Szczensny who made 19 saves on 20 shots, while in the net for the Jenison Wildcats was Kyle Valkemos who made 21 saves on 23 shots.

On Saturday, the Lapeer West Panthers picked up on their winning ways when they took on the Brandon Blackhawks and brought home a second win for the weekend with a 3-1 score.

The Panthers jumped out first with an unassisted goal by Eric Mann at the 8:55 mark in the first period. In the second period Lapeer West grabbed two more goals on the work of Casey Cook, assisted by Jacob Podgorski, who scored at the 14:51 mark. Later that period, with 6:07 left in the game Jacob Podgorski, assisted by Tony Delvecchio and Brad Deane scored the third goal of the game.

For the Blackhawks, James Wedding scored Brandon's lone goal at the 11:20 mark.

Brandon Szczesny was solid in the net for the Panthers, making 13 saves on 14 shots.

Following the weekend action, Lapeer West's record is 9-5-1 overall, with five wins, one loss in the Flint Metro League.

The Panthers will take on the Linden Eagles at 5:45 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Polar Palace in Lapeer.
